Why Winter?

With gray skies overhead and ice underfoot, home renovations are probably the last thing on your mind right now. But there are actually quite a few perks to tackling remodeling projects during the off-season – most notably, cost. Cold weather means low demand, and low demand means low prices. So your budget will go a lot further now than it will come June or July.

To make sure you’re getting a good value, always check out potential contractors’ reputations through the Better Business Bureau or a consumer ratings website. Get bids from multiple companies, and don’t be afraid to haggle. Negotiate each part of the estimate to ensure the very best price.

Where To Start?

As winter drags on, a simple upgrade to your space can dramatically brighten your sprits. Consider a fresh coat of paint or new drapes in a cheery color. Or, if you’re feeling especially industrious, convert an unfinished basement or attic into a home theater. It’ll add valuable square footage to your biggest investment and help you make the most of chilly days spent indoors.

Roof repair is another worthwhile (if slightly less glamorous) winter project. As snow and ice melt, leaks can become a serious liability. So grab a ladder or a pair of binoculars and scan your roof for damaged shingles. Then fix any problems now, before the spring rains hit.

Things To Consider

Obviously, you’ll need to pay special attention to weather forecasts and plan accordingly, especially if your remodel requires utilities to be shut off. If rain or snow is likely, we strongly recommend renting an on-site storage container to protect building materials, equipment, and belongings.

Before starting any renovation, you’ll also want to take steps to protect your floors. Shield carpets with plastic, and cover hardwoods and tile with rubber mats. And if you plan to do woodwork, factor in the lack of humidity. Doors hung in the winter will expand as the weather warms up.

How We Can Help

Mobile PODS® containers can be a lifesaver during a big renovation. Fill them with furniture while installing new flooring, protect tools and appliances until they’re ready for use, or safely stow valuables while service people come and go. Our containers can be kept on-site or stored at our secure Storage Centers. They’re yours as long as you need them – be it a day, a month, or a year.

A while back we wrote a blog post about a few houses that have been featured in famous movies. One of those houses featured in that post was the house from Disney/Pixar’s animated movie, ‘Up’. Blair Bangerter designed a house in Herriman, UT to look just like the house in the movie and now the Hamblin family moved in (and they used PODS!).

The Hamblins moved in on January 7th and were very excited to be moving into a home with such a fun background story.

“A lot of things fell into place that directed us toward the ‘Up’ house in Utah and it has been a life changing experience,” said Hamblin. “We plan on growing old in the house and creating memories for a very long time.”

We couldn’t be more excited to have helped this family move into the house of their dreams. Transitioning from California to Utah (especially in the winter) may take some time, so we were more than happy to be there and help out.

“We were so excited when we received a call from Mr. Hamblin regarding helping him to move into the ‘Up’ replicated home,” said George Spowart, chief marketing officer of PODS Enterprises, Inc. “This definitely goes on the list of one of the most interesting moves we have ever done…”

In case you haven’t, this week we decided that for every 10 likes we get on Facebook, we will donate a dollar to Toys for Tots. So far we’ve gotten around 4,000 new fans helping us donate to a great cause. Thank you everyone for your help!

Now, we want to go a few steps further. Here’s our mission: To reach 25,000 Facebook fans and PODS will donate an additional $1,000 to Toys for Tots. That’s where we need your help. Spread the word any way you can, via Facebook, Twitter, blogs, email, or even passenger pigeon. Every ‘like’ counts and will help us make a difference in so many children’s lives this year.

Think about it, $1,000 can buy a lot of toys. More importantly, those toys will make so many children happy this year. Let’s make a difference together.
