Green Cleaning Tips

Posted May 15, 2013 by Jennifer

Spring is in full swing, and that means it’s time for a thorough housecleaning. This year, make your spring cleaning easy, efficient, and earth-friendly with our favorite all-natural cleaning tips.

Kitchen and Bathroom

Some of the best products for cleaning kitchens and bathrooms can be found in your pantry. In fact, our shopping list almost reads like a recipe, with vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, and even olive oil. Add a box of Borax, a scrub brush, and a spray bottle to your supply list, and you’re ready to get to work.

Grimy windows, dusty appliances, dirty countertops – spritz them all with a solution of equal parts water and distilled white vinegar. Mix a larger batch in a bucket, and you’re ready to mop your floors. Don’t worry – the vinegar odor quickly fades as it dries.

Vinegar is a star in the bathroom, too. Pour it, undiluted, around the edges of your toilet bowl to remove unsightly rings. A paste of baking soda and lemon juice works wonders on hard water deposits and soap scum. And if your drains are running slow, spoon a half-cup of the powder into the drain, then follow with two cups of boiling water. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then run the water for three minutes to flush out everything.

Living Area and Bedroom

Most hard surfaces in your living room can simply be wiped down with a microfiber dust cloth. Microfiber is far better at picking up dust than cotton rags or feather dusters, and a much greener option than paper towels.

For wood, whip up a simple, eco-friendly furniture polish by combining three tablespoons olive oil with one tablespoon lemon juice. It’ll condition and protect all your wood surfaces – and it smells better than lemon-scented furniture spray.

Finally, freshen up your carpets. For spot treatments, try this natural stain remover: one tablespoon baking soda, three tablespoons vinegar, and two cups water. If you’re due for a professional carpet cleaning, find a company that uses a plant-based, non-toxic solvent. For a wall-to-wall deep clean of your carpets, you may need to move your furniture into another room or your garage. Short on space? A PODS container is a great option to store your stuff while the carpet cleaners work and the carpets dry.

Finishing Touches

By this point, your house should look, feel, and smell cleaner and healthier than ever. For those final touches that really make it feel like spring, swap out your winter comforter for an organic cotton coverlet, or update your entryway with a bamboo doormat. Eco-friendly soy candles in a fresh citrus scent are also a perfect way to bid goodbye to winter and usher in the bright, sunny days ahead.
