Living the American Dream

Posted February 9, 2012 by Jennifer

The American Dream began in the 1920′s  as a message of hope for Americans in the Declaration of Independence. It was hope that stated, “all men are created equal” and everyone has a right to, ” life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”

When you think of the American Dream, what comes to mind?

  • The house of your dreams?
  • A spouse and 2 kids?
  • An over-priced car?

These are the “ingredients” a lot of people used to give when describing the American Dream. According to a survey MetLife took, these factors have been changing recently. Today’s American Dream is more of a “Do-It-Yourself” Dream.

The survey showed that the majority of Americans strive to attain the DIY American Dream, which is different than the factors listed above. It’s less materialistic and more about living a meaningful life and personal fulfillment– determined by relationships with family and friends. While all of those materialistic things are nice to have as added benefits, the DIY American Dream adds more happiness and successes in life. Think of your average day and who you spend it with. Those are the people helping you achieve the DIY American Dream. These are the “ingredients” that we can still relate to the American Dream back in the 1920s. Everyone has a right to be happy, and happiness doesn’t always have a price tag.

What does the American Dream mean to you and how are you accomplishing your dream? Share your story on how you are making the way to achieving YOUR American Dream.
